This Podcast Is The Bomb.com – MOGUL: The Life and Death of Chris Lighty

By  |  0 Comments

Mogul is a podcast from Gimlet Media that focuses on the rise of hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty up until his untimely suicide in the summer of 2012. Lighty was a major player in the hip-hop game and the man behind the careers of Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Fat Joe, LL Cool J, 50 Cent and many more. He co-founded Violator Management with Mona Scott-Young in the late 90’s and together they boasted the strongest hip-hop roster of the time.  This podcast tells the story of most of it, from Chris’ beginnings in the bronx (the borough that birthed hip hop)  to his journey to the top of his industry.  Lighty made so much out of his life and hip hop with practically nothing and he did it without a blueprint. Mogul explores the pressure Lighty had to maintain all that he had built while weaving in between beautiful stories about New York City, hip-hop and the artists that made it happen. Mogul handles his inevitable suicide in an honest and necessary way. In a way that many people who were a part of his life are unwilling to accept, and in a way that a lot of communities of colors still don’t.
